The gist of this story appears in my novel, See Willy See, to be released tomorrow, November 8, 2019. It will take a while to get to the bookstores and libraries, but it’s available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.
Stationed in Panama, training for combat, Connor dreaded his sister’s letters from Paris where she served in the U.S. Consulate and where they Nazis were poised to take over the city.
“I was just telling Daniel about the time Freckles got to snooping under the woodpile and found that nest of baby rabbits,” she wrote, “remember how we took them out of the dog’s very mouth?”
“I look in the woods here and imagine all the baby rabbits hidden in them.”
Connor smiled, remembering all their rescue missions—until he realized she was writing in code.
“Jesus!” he exploded, scrubbing his hands through already rumpled hair, glancing around at his tent mates, watching him.
“My sister’s French Resistance boyfriend is going to get her killed rescuing little Jewish bunny rabbits.”
Congratulations on your book! Nicely done six!
thanks, Lisa. I almost didn’t manage a six this week. (like last week) Books due to arrive Monday and then I need to schedule readings and such. (And I’m still caring for my grandson [16 months now] half time.) That sounds like whining, doesn’t it? Sorry. I’m thrilled to have my book out there.
Congratulations on the book release!
As to the literal content, I have a story of my own about safeguarding a nest of baby rabbits left by momma (in our yard) at the onset of a tropical storm. Nature is fascinating and totally awe inspiring.
To the essence of your Six, I can’t even imagine the extraordinary heroics performed and sacrifices made during those years.
My problem with the six was that I couldn’t figure out how to reveal how to reveal how proud Connor was of his sister, besides being scared to death for her. And yes, we used to rescue baby rabbits. That’s what brought that idea to mind as a code that would get by the censors.
I neglected to ask. Did the bunnies survive the storm?
Congratulations on the book! Very nice Six!
Congratulations on the book! Some of those bunnies survived, i am sure, and some did not. Same for the rescuers. It was a sad and terrible time.
What a great SSS! I love how you wove a bit o nature into this story.
Congratulations on your book!
We had a few rabbits when I was growing up and I remember being fascinated by their tiny little hairless bodies when they were first born. They didn’t look anything like the little fluffy bunnies they would become.
Congrats on the book!
Nicely done with ‘show, not tell’ technique.
