Leaning out the window, I yell “clear” and start
the engine, remembering for an instant the scene in MASH, the movie, when a
prop runs through one of the characters—I don’t remember who.
I head down the taxiway, still adjusting to
steering with my feet.
Since I’m rated as a VFR (visual flight
reference, rather than instrument) pilot, I lift off into clear blue skies.
I’m flying Nebraska skies so I turn my nose into
a steep “crab angle” against a stiff cross wind.
Oh, how I miss those clear, blue skies, even
when I had to fight the wind.
If i’d ever learned to fly, i think i would miss it, too. Well told!
One always misses what they once were able to do. The thought of clear blue skies, especially when so many areas are still in the midst of winter like conditions, is something to embrace.
Very cool (to learn to fly)… not a fan of heights but to fly a plane must be very …invigorating.
Fun Six
Oh to know the thrill of flight is such a wonderful experience.
Yes. My husband is a VFR pilot and that “Clear!” came to mind with this prompt. I flew in another direction but enjoyed your checklist here.
Funny the things that stick in your mind about an experience like piloting a plane. Boy I loved it.
Stolen from a WWII song – Bless them all.
Bless ’em all, bless ’em all, bless ’em all,
the long and the short and the tall ..
Bless the instructors who taught us to fly,
Sent us to solo and left us to die; .
Hi John. Yes, I am familiar with that song. My mom was air corps. Built and repaired radios for B24 Liberators.
